Rotational Grazing, Intensive Pasture Management, Seasonal Dairying, are some of the phrases that describe management practices of individual farms in this group.
The Pro-Grass-Tinators are all Pasture Based Dairy Farmers who have joined together in the hope of learning from one another.
The group was first organized with a small number of farms in 1999. The goal was to learn from one another by sharing management practices as well as financial comparisons. There are currently 17 members from nine US States who participate. The group meets at least three times each year on a members farm to see the practices used and discuss the attributes of grazing management on that farm.
The group members are required to keep sound financial records of their farm operations and share those records with all members of the group. The Cornell Dairy Farm Business Summary (DFBS) is the system of record analysis used by the group. Each year, a financial summary is prepared and comparisons are shared at a winter meeting.
After hosting a group visit, the farm operator is required to share his reasons for his management practices in a group session called the 'Hot Seat'. The goal of this session is that the operator and all members present can learn from the discussions provided from this session.
